When it comes to Winter, we can all be captivated by its beauty. A fresh snow is often one of the more mesmerizing sights of the season. However, most lawn care owners don't realize the preventable damage that may be occurring during these cold Winter months. I have compiled a list of simple things that homeowners can follow to ensure that they are doing the most for their lawns to take preventative measures and promote healthier growth in the Spring.
First off is the simplest of tasks. Clean it up. It sounds simple doesn't it? Well it is! Removing items from your lawn can stop mold growth, smothered grass, and prevent unwanted guests such as insects, mice, and pests. A garden hose can leave a dead area in your lawn for weeks to come if you forget to pick it up. A simple hose rack or a designated area of the garage can save you that eye sore in the near future. Kids toys, fallen tree limbs, and that pile of leaves covering the base of your trees can become an issue as well, Take care of these items in the early Winter so that you can enjoy your time in the warmer months.
Spread Cool-Weather grass seed in the winter months to promote healthier growth in the spring and possibly take care of those "not-so-full" areas of your lawn. It is important to remember not to over do it in areas because you don't want a jungle growing on that one part of your lawn.
Mulch your flower beds before the coldest temperatures arrive. A late winter mulch can help with weeds in the early Spring, The mulch acts as a barrier, preventing the seeds of weeds from germinating in Spring; stopping weeds before they ever get the chance to grow. Also, be sure to remove as much of the older mulch as possible to prevent mold growth in the lower area of your beds.
